Each year we always try to stop at Matagorda, Texas, for a few days of fishing and shelling. This year Pam and Roy were also there and so we got to fish together, enjoy the mosquito's, (yikes!), and celebrate Pam's birthday.
The fish, as usual did not let us down. In two days we caught a total of six keeper reds, five black drum, and a couple of legal sheep head. Among other fish, Roy caught a Florida pompano and I caught a small bonnet head shark, (the shark was released unharmed as we use circle hooks).
For the second year in a row no bull reds showed up and we wonder if they have all been kept? Many of the fisherman here keep everything regardless of the size limit. Many others ask us what size fish must be and we often have to lend them our tape measures. Is there a reading problem in Texas, (we also see this in Florida)?
Anyway, we had a great bite but we did learn to not return on a holiday weekend, The only other way to describe all the fisherman is to say it was very similar to combat fishing in Alaska. In other words grin and bare it as you uncross lines after being cast across time after time.
Renita and Pam of course were busy busy checking out all the stores, there aren't many here, and found an excellent restaurant, Spoonbills. While the menu was limited. the meals were gourmet and the prices were very reasonable for the top quality. If your ever here be sure to make reservations!
The meal out celebrated Pam's birthday, which we are not going to spoil by reveling her age per her request! We ended the celebration with a Renita baked birthday cake! Today we are leaving for High Island and a couple of days of birding before we head to Betty's and then Grand Isle.
Clear skies
